What Is GPA?
Grade point average (GPA) summarizes academic performance by converting course grades into grade-point values and weighting them by credit hours.
How GPA Is Calculated
For each course, multiply the grade value by the course credit hours. Add all course grade points, then divide by the total included credit hours.
GPA Formula
Course grade points = grade value × credit hours. Then GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours.
GPA Calculation Example
If an A is worth 4.0 and a B is worth 3.0, an A in a 3-credit course produces 12 grade points and a B in a 4-credit course produces 12 grade points. The GPA is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.
GPA vs Cumulative GPA
A semester GPA normally uses courses from one term. A cumulative GPA combines grade points and credits across multiple terms.
Credit Hours and GPA
Credit hours determine how strongly a course affects the result. A 4-credit course contributes twice as much as a 2-credit course at the same grade value.

Can two schools calculate GPA differently?+
Yes. Grade mappings, treatment of repeated courses, pass/fail courses, weighted classes, and rounding rules can vary by institution.
