Methodology

This page documents the core formulas and assumptions used by AcademicCalc. Institutional policies may differ, so official school or university rules should take priority.

GPA Weighting

For each valid course, AcademicCalc multiplies the selected grade value by credit hours. Semester GPA is total grade points divided by total included credit hours.

Default 4.0 Scale

The default letter mappings are A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, and F 0.0. A custom letter-grade scale is available because institutions can differ.

Percentage-to-Letter Assumptions

When percentage input is used on the standard GPA scale, AcademicCalc uses common U.S. planning boundaries: A from 93, A- from 90, B+ from 87, B from 83, B- from 80, C+ from 77, C from 73, C- from 70, D+ from 67, D from 60, and F below 60.

Points-Based Grade Formula

Total earned points are divided by total possible points and multiplied by 100.

Weighted-Score Methodology

Each item's percentage is multiplied by its entered course weight. Contributions are added directly. If weights do not equal 100%, AcademicCalc warns the user and does not silently normalize the result.

Rounding

Calculations retain normal JavaScript numeric precision internally. Values are rounded only for display, generally to two decimal places.

Limitations

The calculators do not automatically apply institution-specific rules for repeated courses, pass/fail courses, extra credit, dropped assignments, special program weighting, academic forgiveness, or custom rounding unless the interface explicitly provides such an option.
