How Course Grades Are Calculated
Course grades are commonly calculated from total points or from weighted assignments and categories. Your syllabus or institution determines which method applies.
Points-Based Grades
In points mode, add all earned points and divide by all possible points. For example, 80/100 plus 45/50 gives 125/150 = 83.33%.
Weighted Grades
In weighted mode, each item or category percentage is multiplied by its course weight. AcademicCalc shows a warning if entered weights do not equal 100% and does not silently normalize them.
Grade Percentage Formula
Points mode: total earned ÷ total possible × 100. For weighted mode, each contribution is item percentage × weight, and the contributions are added together.
Example Grade Calculation
Homework at 90% with a 30% weight contributes 27 percentage points. A midterm at 80% with a 30% weight contributes 24, and a final at 70% with a 40% weight contributes 28. Total = 79%.
Why Grading Systems Differ
Schools and instructors may use different letter-grade boundaries, weighting methods, dropped scores, extra credit, rounding rules, and category policies.
Common Mistakes
- Adding assignment percentages instead of adding points.
- Using weights that do not total the intended course percentage.
- Confusing a category's score percentage with its course weight.
- Assuming a common letter-grade boundary is official for every institution.
